Tip-Off Club Meeting and Scrimmage

The JU Tip-Off Club held its first event of the 2012-2013 season on August 4th at Swisher Gymnasium. Some fifty fans and boosters were treated to a sneak preview of the team. I think that everyone came away pleased. It was obvious to all that JU will be greatly improved this upcoming year. After the scrimmage the TOC hosted a cook-out and a meet and greet with the team and coaches. Coach Warren previewed the Dominican trip and had each player introduce himself. It is a great group of young men that will represent Jacksonville University this year. It was a fun event and a nice way to meet everyone.

We also got to meet new Director of Basketball Operations Don Anderson. Don comes to JU from Binghamton (NY) University. Not only is he a great guy, but he will be a big help to the basketball program. Please welcome Don to JU and Jacksonville when you get the opportunity.

The Dominican trip was a rewarding experience for both the players and staff. Not only did the team get to play some ball but was able to do humanitarian work as well. In between visiting orphanages and schools the team got in four games. JU showed some real scoring ability by averaging 100 points per game.

Our next TOC event is Wednesday, October 10th at Black Finn (Town Center). Bob Wenzel, former JU Head Coach and current ESPN basketball analyst will be our guest speaker. We will start at 6:00 with appetizers (courtesy of Sapporo USA) and a cash bar. The TOC will have events in November (Tip-Off luncheon), December, January, February, and March/April. We are planning to have interesting guest speakers as well as Coach Warren at each event. Dues for the club are $100 and will go to the development of the JU basketball program.

Please sign up and get your friends to sign up. We plan on having a fun and memorable season.

Starting Over

As rough as the regular season was, the great thing about the postseason is that everyone starts over at 0-0!

First, thanks to everyone for their support throughout this season. It’s been a long year, but I know that everyone in encouraged with the recruiting class that we’re putting together as well as seeing the support that we have from you.

I also want to thank all of you for coming to the Tipoff Club meeting prior to the UNF game. Coach Smith is a tremendous man that I’ve known for several years and is a big fan of what we’re doing with the basketball program.

Now, back to the business at hand – the A-Sun Tournament. Wednesday’s game tips off at 2:30 p.m. and if you can’t make it to Macon, you can catch the game on Comcast Sports Southeast (Ch. 54 on Comcast in Jacksonville) or ESPN3.

If you’re coming up to Macon, let me know (jlamp@ju.edu) as we always like to try to catch up with our fans who make the trip up for the conference tournament when there is some down time.
